How to use Postshot plugin and bring Gaussian Splattin into After Effects?
I thought I'd make this quick tutorial on how to use 3D Gaussian Splatting models created with Postshot and how to bring them out in After Effects.
And since there doesn't seem to be any concrete step-by-step documentation on this topic anywhere yet, I thought it's could be useful to go through what this postshot effect is made from and how can we use its parameters.

I made a small interactive web demo of a Ghost Wall FX where you can toggle between normarl GS model and transparent one. This works best in desktop browser where you are able to hit G key on your keyboard. Web demo is implemented with Spline. In Postshot program it is now possible to render z-depth channel of Gaussian Splatting models. I made few test with it on After Effects. The grayscale depth image looks in my opinion very cool itself. It offers now the way to play with depth of field camera effect on Gaussian models. I managed to find this nice ghost effect by chance when I was training a Gaussian Splatting point cloud in Postshot. It looked like a very elegant transparency effect where you can see 3D objects through things in a new way. From afar, it resembles a galaxy or a star nebula. Do you think some kind of ML / AI could be used for object detection and then extraction from the Gaussian points? If so, one could have a large database of environments like this, with objects extracted out. Labelling of the objects and environments with tags could be done, and then with some kind of vector embedding you could have text-input-based genAI for creating 3D models.

I am imagining a setup where you have a 3 cameras mounted on a dolly that you roll around the room to efficiently capture everything all at once.
I have same kind of intrests to build that kind of scanning stick with three cameras. It would be cool.
Is it worth it to learn Postshot over using Polycam? Can you tell a huge difference? Thanks Olli.
Polycam is easy and with it you can create certain quality of Gaussian Splatting models. With PostShot you see how the process go and you can train much better quality models because you are able to tweak the controls and train you model much further than the default setting that Polycam offers.

Hey Olli great video! Do you know if Postshot works with 360 camera footage directly or do you still need to break the 360 footage down into single frames before import into Postshot?
Postshot does not yet support 360 images. But there are several requests for it on postshot's discord. Perhaps Jascha who is the developer of this software will add this feature in it in the future.

Great! Thank you for tutorial! Are there any filtering methods? Obviously, each splat has X and Y coordinate, perhaps there is a filter that finds the most stretched on one axis or two axes splats and selects them. As a rule, they are the ones that clog the whole view. As a Guru in Gaussian Splatting topic, perhaps you have heard sometigng of such tools?

I wonder if you could create High Dynamic Range Gaussian Splats and use them in 3D modelling workflows to replace traditional HDRIs.
My Drone save the flight data into a log file. With heading and gimbal pitch etc. does any of the 3gs software support importing such data to improve the training or camera tracking step?

What do you recommend in terms of equipment for scanning large outdoor environments?
There are certain undocumented requirements for the Postshot plugin to work in After Effects that I found out. The most important is that After Effects version should have the Advanced 3D renderer option which is not supported by older processors with 2 cores. An NVidia GPU should be present as well. Otherwise, you will just see a blank screen in the AE composition.
I have an AMD Threadripper 64-core CPU, an NVidia RTX 3090 and I set after effects comp to Advanced 3D and still its a blank screen. I just scanned a room and im curious to see it in AE. The psht itself is 846 622 KB. Whats the solution here? I've been waiting for after effects for like an hour now, maybe in some point the splats appear.

Do you know if it currently also exports a low poly model with some baked textures (from the high poly). Things we'd want in a game engine, for instance? In blender, for instance, you would use the multires modifier to maintain low poly mesh, and the high poly mesh details will get baked to put with the low poly mesh.
There is separate style in Meshy which creates specially low poly models. You should try that.
I must admit. The state of this technology is better than I expected. 3D modeling is much more complex than image generation.

Hi Ollie, Have you had the chance to compare this plug-in to the payed plug-in from AE- Scripts? I purchased it because I’m working on a Mac and I believe the post shot plug-in is not Mac compatible yet. It has a couple more functions and it supports up to five different splats at the same time. I think the distortion function is quite neat. What do you think? Kai

Finally there's a free plugin that can import .ply to After Effects and running the Gaussian Splats in real-time! Like AEscripts plugin, but the great thing is, this is free... :D
